Asphalt shingles are the most popular and most-used roofing material in the United States. Asphalt shingles are mostly used in the suburbs due to its stylish looks and durability. However, asphalt shingles can be difficult to install due to its weight and installation fees.
However, if you want to install new asphalt shingles for your home, you can always do the installation on your own. Installing the shingles on your own saves you money. Here are the steps on how to install asphalt shingles on your roof. However, as much as possible, it is advisable if you let expert roofers do the installation.
Step 1: Remove all shingles and flashing
Use a gardening fork or a roofing shovel to remove the remaining shingles and to flashing on your roof. When removing the shingles, make sure that you use the hammer method to get them off faster. Protecting the sides and windows of your house is also a priority as you might break them while removing the shingles.
Step 2: Clean the roof
Your roof may be dusty because of the shingles removed. That is why you need to sweep the roof afterward. There may be boards in your roof that are unattached or rotten. If the board is unattached, nail them on the roof. And if the boards are rotten, replace them immediately and attach them on the sheathing.
Step 3: Install underlayment and new flashing
After attaching the new boards on the roof, you can use asphalt, felt paper, or special waterproof underlayment as a new flashing for the roof. The best method in installing roofing paper is a self-sealing membrane with a rain screen. However, using a 15 lb. roofing paper like most roofers do is also a great choice.
Step 4: Choose the starter course you will use
In choosing a roofing shingle, you can either have the pre-cut ones or the ones that you need to cut for the specific project. Some people like to buy only one variety of shingles to fit while others want pre-cut shingles so they can adjust them according to their roofing types.
Step 5: Use chalk to guide yourself
You may use chalk in guiding you on where the shingles would fall into place or marking them on where to cut the shingles. Chalk is essential because it's easily erasable yet can give clear marks on where to put the shingles or cut the shingles.
Step 6: Place the shingles on the roof
In installing roofing shingles, make sure that every cut you have made earlier is in the exact place. Once you put the shingle in their area, make sure to attach them using a hammer and asphalt nails. Once this is done, you can now proceed with applying asphalt cement around the edges of the roof.
Once your new roof is installed, you can go to your local roofing contractor to see if you did a great job at installing your roof.
